Dedication of Anita Smith's Memorial Garden

On Saturday, June 9 the dedication of Anita Smith's Memorial Garden will be held at the Library at 1 pm. Located on the west side of the library, the garden was conceived and created by more than twenty-five women who wish to remember Anita Smith. She was an avid gardener and reader, as well as a library volunteer and a friend to many.

Additional contributions are welcome and should be made to the Friends of the Edwards Library in Anita's name. All are welcome.

June Book Club discussion date change

This month, our Library Book Club will be reading "Bossypants" by Tina Fey. Much like Ms. Fey, her book is "short, messy and impossibly funny" according to Amazon.com and we think it is a laugh-out-loud funny memoir that nearly everyone can relate to in one way or another.

You may pick up a copy of this book at the Main Desk.Our book discussion evening meeting will be for June only on Thursday, June 28 at 6:30 pm. This change will be only for the month of June. New members are always welcome. Join us for good company and fun conversation.

Library Closed Days

The Library will be closed on Saturday, May 26 in anticipation of our new circulation system which is being uploaded to our computers. On Monday, May 29 you will see a new patron catalog. If you need assistance, please ask a librarian.

The Library will also be closed on Monday, May 28 in observance of Memorial Day.

Another Language Book Signing

Author Jeanne Braham will be reading from her new book "Another Language: portraits of assistance dogs and their people" at the library on Thursday, May 24 at 6:30 -7:30 pm. Photographs in the book have been photographed by local Southampton resident, Robert Floyd.

The book profiles sixteen people who have worked with the NEADS/Dogs For Deaf and Disabled Americans program in north-central Massachusetts and who tell their own stories in their own words. In a respectful, compassionate and compelling way, the stories are brought to life of those who use the dogs, and those who train them as well as others who work with NEADS human clients.

All are welcome to this program, no registration is required.

Lego Club

Our next Lego Club meeting will be on Tuesday, May 1 from 4-5 pm. Bring your friends and make something extra fabulous! We have lots and lots of Legos.

Norris School Poetry and Art Exhibit

Norris School teacher Leslie deCursio and some of the 4th graders will be displaying their works of poetry and art at the Library on April 12. A reception with refreshments will be provided from 6:30-7:30 pm. The public is invited and encouraged to visit the library and support our up-and-coming writers and artists.

Chemistry Adventure Kits

Start your chemistry adventure here at the Edwards Library. The Passport to Chemistry Adventure Program will be providing chemistry kits for kids K - 6 to use with adult supervision that can be checked out to do the experiments at home and to collect stickers for a chemistry passport. The kits may be checked out for one week, and will be available at the Library on April 18th.

This exciting new program has been funded by the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Special Program in the Chemical Sciences and Mount Holyoke. The kits will be available until June. Check out a kit and learn some astonishing things about chemistry!

Book and Bake Sale Coming in May!

Our annual Book and Bake Sale will be on Saturday, May 19 from 9 am to 2 pm. If you are a Friend of the Edwards Library, a special book-only preview will be held on Friday, May 18 from 3 pm to 5 pm. You may also join the Friends of the Edwards Library at this time and come to the preview. Sorry, no handheld devices may be used to check the value of books at this preview. Booksellers are welcome, but must be Friends.

If you would like to help with the sale, you can volunteer to sort books beforehand, or help out at the tables the day of the sale. We would really appreciate any baked goods you might donate too!
Baked goods may be dropped off at the Library on Friday, May 18 or early on Saturday, May 19. Please note any special ingredients in case of allergies.

To set up a time to volunteer, please contact the Library at 413-527-9480, or sign up at the Main Desk. We always have a great turn-out and there are thousands of interesting and inexpensive books. Come early, stay late. We are looking forward to seeing you!

Fun Writing Group at the Library

If you have ever wanted to put your thoughts on paper, write stories, or poetry but were unsure or timid about doing it, join us at the library for our writing group which meets Tuesdays at 2:30 pm. This is a peer-run, friendly and supportive group. All forms of writing and all levels of experience are welcome.

Join us for a hands-on workshop on Thursday, March 29 at 6:30 pm at the Library to learn how to download and enjoy these digital media. Bring your e-Reader, laptop or smartphone and we'll show you how it's done! It's easier than you might think.

The Southampton Book Discussion Group is changing their meeting time to the last TUESDAY of each month at 6:30 pm. Anyone who is interested in joining may come to our meeting. This month's book is Bellefleur by Joyce Carol Oates. Books are available to check out at the main desk.

Celebrate Dr. Seuss's Birthday!

There will be Seussian stories! Art & crafts! and a birthday cake with punch.

Lego Club!

Bring your ideas and building skills to our Lego Club. We have lots of Legos and you will have a fabulous time making unique creations and creatures with your friends. This program is best for school-age children.

NEW! Community Parent/Child Center at Library

Join other families for a facilitated playgroup including story time, arts and crafts and more. Grown-ups can socialize while the kids have fun! Hosted by Edwards Library and funded by Hampshire Regional School District's Coordinated Family and Community Engagement Grant.

The new playgroup will be on the second Wednesday and fourth Thursday of every month beginning in January. The first will be on Wednesday, January 11, 2012. All playgroups will be from 10:30 am to noon. January 26, 2012 will the the Thursday playgroup. Please check our calendar for further dates. The Grant will continue through June, and may be extended.

Jacqueline Sheehan Reading and Book Discussion

Thursday, October 27, 2011 6:30-8:00 pm in the Edwards Public Library Community Room, 30 East St, Southampton. FREE to Friends of the Edwards Public Library members, or join at the door. Featuring Roger Tincknell on guitar, mandolin and banjo!

There will be a "Friend-ly" Chocolate Goodies Competition. Eat the entries and get your antioxidants! Also, a free drawing for 2012 Book Lover's Calendar.

Knitter Unite!

Hope you are getting ready to begin your Fall and Winter knitting with us at the Edwards Library Southampton Knitting Group on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m.

Our first meeting will be Thursday October 6 at 6:30 p.m. Bring in your recent creations from this summer and your projects for this winter. If you have a problem with a project, bring that too. Peer coaching is part of the fun. We welcome your ideas and your wish list for fun things we can do.
