Lego Club!

NEW! Community Parent/Child Center at Library

Join other families for a facilitated playgroup including story time, arts and crafts and more. Grown-ups can socialize while the kids have fun! Hosted by Edwards Library and funded by Hampshire Regional School District's Coordinated Family and Community Engagement Grant.

The new playgroup will be on the second Wednesday and fourth Thursday of every month beginning in January. The first will be on Wednesday, January 11, 2012. All playgroups will be from 10:30 am to noon. January 26, 2012 will the the Thursday playgroup. Please check our calendar for further dates. The Grant will continue through June, and may be extended.

Knitter Unite!

Hope you are getting ready to begin your Fall and Winter knitting with us at the Edwards Library Southampton Knitting Group on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m.

Our first meeting will be Thursday October 6 at 6:30 p.m. Bring in your recent creations from this summer and your projects for this winter. If you have a problem with a project, bring that too. Peer coaching is part of the fun. We welcome your ideas and your wish list for fun things we can do.

New Expanded Hours

The Library will now be open on Monday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. We have begun our Saturday hours which will be 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Friday's hours have also changed. We will now be open from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

New Museum Pass for the Library!

We have been given 2 free museum passes to the U.S.S. Constitution in Charlestown, Massachusetts. The passes are good for up to 9 people. Please visit their website for more information.

These passes are a wonderful addition to our other free and reduced-price passes. Teen Mindfulness & Yoga Program

Are you stressed out and worried about school, friends, family issues, body image or dating?

Do you have enough time to do the things that REALLY matter to you?

Is your mind often going over the same problems repeatedly?

Learn practical methods to feel better. You will learn techniques to quiet your mind, to create space in your life to do the things that matter most to you and to find solutions to what stresses you out.

This program is designed for teens 12-17 years old at the Library on Thursday, August 11 beginning at 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. It is sponsored by the Edwards Public Library and is free but preregistration is required at the main desk, or call 413-527-9480.

Summer Reading Club at the Edwards Library in Southampton -- "One World, Many Stories" and for Teens - "You Are Here"

This year we'll be traveling all over the world, and to other worlds as well with our theme "One World, Many Stories" for kids, and "You Are Here" for teens. Summer is the perfect time for reading or listening to audio books, watching DVDs and reading magazines...all things you can get for FREE at the library.

And we'll have great programs and fun, starting with "A World of Music" with musician and naturalist, John Root on Thursday, July 7 at 6:30 pm. We'll learn songs from around the world to the accompaniment of guitar and musical instruments from diverse cultures in this popular hour-long interactive music and movement program.

Zoo On The Go, animals from Forest Park Zoo will come back for a second year on Thursday, July 28 at 6:30 pm. Registration for this program is required and space is limited. Don't miss it!

We will be celebrating Harry Potter's birthday in July also, have fun craft programs, and a Pokemon Party and more!

Annual Book & Bake Sale at the Library!

The Friends of Edwards Public Library will hold its annual Book and Bake Sale on Saturday, May 21, 2011, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at the Library, 30 East Street, Southampton. There will be a special preview sale for Friends members only from 9 to 10 a.m.; memberships may be purchased at the door. The sale is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year’s sale features special “Five-Bucks-a-Bag” pricing all day, with bags to be provided.

Gently-used hardcover and paperback books for adults and children are available, as well as home-baked goods. All proceeds benefit Edwards Public Library’s collection and programs.

The Friends of the Edwards Public Library wish to thank the public for their book donations, as well as Heritage Books, Sage Books and Cherry Picked Books for their support. They are a volunteer group whose purpose is to support and promote the Library. For more information, call 413-527-9480.

Parenting Workshop - Taking Care of Yourself as a Foundation for Parenting Well

Do you find yourself exhausted, uncertain or overwhelmed by the demands of parenting? Are you sometimes impatient, spread thin or ineffective in the day-to-day requirements of being a parent? Modern-day parenting can leave many of us depleted. But there is another way to parent; a way that enlivens and transforms our lives and the lives of our children.

Join a community of parents on Thursday, November 4 from 6:30-7:30 pm at the library, to explore the challenges of parenting and discover ways to replenish and rejuvenate yourself. Childcare for children 3 and up will be available.

The class is taught by Susan McNamara, M. A., CHHC. Susan, a mother of two, has explored the transformational opportunities of parenting. She is a long-term practitioner of yoga, meditation and whole foods eating, all of which has served as a foundation for self-care that informs her parenting.

Edwards Library is pleased to present award-winning author John Vaillant, Saturday, October 16 at 6:30 pm to talk about his new book, "The Tiger: a true story of vengeance and survival." John is a freelance journalist whose work has appeared in many popular publications including National Geographic and the New Yorker.

The Tiger is a true story of a poacher in Russia's Boreal Forest who hunts the endangered Siberian tiger to sell its body parts for Chinese medicines. The poacher makes his fatal mistake when he wounds a tiger capable of calculated revenge.

Southampton Knitting Club Resumes Thursday

Rubber Stamp Carving for Adults and Children 12+

Join us on Tuesday July 27 at 6:30 pm for an instructional workshop on carving rubber stamps, presented by Cathy Thibodeau. Cathy has been carving her own rubber stamps for some time now and she will teach us all how to make our own signature stamps! We will briefly discuss selecting an image and transferring it to material. The focus will be on how to carve with tips & tricks, and a bit about mounting the finished stamp.

Carving material: Speedball Speedy Carve or Staedtler Master Carve

Gouge cutter: Speedball or Staedtler Gouge Blades & Handle (We will mostly used blade size #1.)

Important Changes to Holds Beginning February

In light of the worsening budget situation and likely upcoming cuts to the regional delivery service, the C/W MARS Executive Committee voted to reduce the number of holds C/W MARS patrons can make from 20 to 10.

The new limit began on February 2. Old holds over the 10 limit will remain on your record until filled or deleted

Clark Art Institute Pass Available

We are pleased to announce that the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts has provided us with a free pass to their permanent collection as well as special exhibitions for two adults through October 31, 2008. Children under 18 and students with ID are always free.

Two special exhibitions will be on view June 22 through October 19, 2008. Like Breath on Glass: Whistler, Inness, and the Art of Painting Softly features 40 paintings from leading American artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and Homer and Sargent from the Clark which will inaugurate the galleries and the opening of the new Stone Hill Center

Passes cannot be reserved and are available at the Main Desk.

Memorial Day Display

Marty Klein Exhibit at Library

"A Sense of Place" -- Easthampton artist/photographer Marty Klein will exhibit photographs and scanographs at the library from April 12 through May 17. Scanographs are produced using a flatbed scanner to capture highly detailed images of natural objects. They are then edited and processed to produce striking and original archival prints.

An artist's reception will be held on April 19 from 11 am to 12 pm.

Join the staff and Friends of the Edwards Public Library in Southampton when they host the third annual "Read Across America, Read-A-Thon" Saturday, March 1 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Everyone is invited!

Local guest readers will include celebrities, dignitaries and neighbors who promise to enchant us with non-stop readings from local author, Dr. Seuss. Topping off the festivities will be the Seuss-A-Cake, along with party snacks, Dr. Seuss videos, and on-going arts & crafts.

In an effort to promote youth literacy, there will be a table st up where children can get their very own library card. Mark your calendar for plenty of Seuss-A-Fun!

Stress is a part of our daily lives; we cannot avoid it. We can, however, change our relationship to stress, learning to see it as an opportunity to locate where we are out of balance. Come educate yourself on the effects of stress, while learning skills to help you enhance your health, cope with physical conditions and improve the way you move through your day. It's as easy as your next breath!

Musty or moldy books including those from basements. Sadly, moldy books can endanger the Library's collection

Our Book & Bake Sale will be held May 18 and 19 in conjunction with the "Spring into Southampton" community event on Saturday May 19. The book sale begins Friday evening from 4-7:30 p.m. exclusively for the Friends of the Library. Saturday's sale is from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and is open to the public. You may purchase your membership at the door either day, and then shop for great buys and delicious goodies.

All proceeds will benefit the Edwards Public Library to provide materials for projects and events whose costs cannot be met by the Library's budget.

Beanies for Balaad

Tired of your Beanie Babies & don't know what to do with them? Our troops are asking for small toys to fill their pockets and give to the kids of Balaad, Iraq: Beanie Babies & othe small plush animals, matchbox cars, as well as wrapped hard candies. Troops also need greeting cards with envelopes (all occasions) to write home and also new Chapsticks. Bring these items to the library and we will forward them to Sage Books who will send them to an Air Force Chaplain in Balaad.
